NME Double Page Analysis

Untitled

The colour scheme is fairly simple and straight foward on this double page spread that features the band ‘FOALS. We see four dark pictures, but the rest of the page being white, a simple but effective colour scheme seeing as it makes the darkened pictures stand out more. Grey pictures against a white background seem more effective that against any other backdrop. This appeals to the genre because it shows their artists to be more than they look, they have depth and its a clever touch by the editors.

The photography for this double page spread is straight foward, on the left side, we have one large picture of on the band members, it takes up the whole A4 page, he is holding bones, which is a continued theme seeing as all other four members are holding them too. It’s part of the ‘getting to the bone’ of the band perspection. All images are posed, they are very direct and emotive with the reader, creates a more direct approach rather than any other shot. The images are posed, no smiles so it seems a very serious interview and that makes them seem like an important band who are serious about their music.

The writing style is very descriptive, they would of done that to fully pack the interview with excitement and getting the most out of the band that they can. It’s sophisticated language, they aren’t stupid and it comes across that they are intelligent. Some of the writing is quite graphic, for example “from a couple shagging, and one of them cutting themselves”. They were telling a strange story. This sort of language shows that the magazine appeals to more older people rather than children, and this band creates quite dark music, appealing to teenagers and olders, rather than kids.

Overall, the magazine has certain elements in it that create it well and make it entruiging. In the top corner in red it has “2013 BIGGEST ALBUMS” which creates the feel of that the band are the real deal and it’s a big interview. Another element is the language that breaks the boundaires that other magazines just don’t. It makes the magazine more interesting and appealing to alot of youth, because they enjoy that rebellious side.

The fonts on this double page are fairly small, and simple. Dark writing against the white background is the perfect contrast and an easy read. Overall the font is a good choice because it’s easy to read, and that is what you want most from an interview, the text.
